It looks like a simple school-level math but people can’t decide if the answer is 1 or 16.
This simple math equation – 8 divided by 2(2+2) – was posted on twitter by a user. Since being shared online, the tweet has gone sort of viral with thousands of comments. Despite the simplicity of the equation, it seems people are unable to agree on the correct answer.

Did you answer 1? The problem is that a lot of people answered 16.
Let’s take a look at the two answers.
Answer 1.
8 / 2*(2+2) = 8 / 2(4) = 8 / 8 = 1
Answer 2.
8 / 2*(2+2) = 8 / 2(4) = 4(4) = 16
It's either 1 or 16 depending on which mathematician you listen to, because order of operations isn't a hard and fast rule, and math is really just a language.

So it seems there is no correct answer for this equation.
The answer will depend on whether you were taught the BODMAS or the PEMDAS method in school.
As per BODMAS method (Brackets, Orders, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction), you will get 16 as the final answer.
But as per PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction), the final answer is 1.
in PEMDAS you do parenthesis first, and then addition or subtraction (whichever one comes first) and same for multiplication and division. So 8÷2(2+2) –> 8÷2(4) which is same as 8÷2×4. Since for PEMDAS for multiplication and division you do the one that comes first. (1/2)
