Save Wells (478 Words)
We can associate wells with various aspects of human life and if we disintegrate story of a well in a village , town or a city then we can understand the kind of community residing around in a very different manner. Every well might have a different story to tell. Some wells might talk about a small community that lived around the well, some might give information about kind of social life prevalent in the village or town. Some might display a splendorous art work telling story of gods and demons , some might talk about its importance of whole kingdom , could be of national importance and might even have stories related to national wealth being hidden in some well. Wells are symbol of diversity in our country , with the different terrain, geology, hydrology, use, culture etc wells have changed in different parts of the country. No two wells in any corner of the country are same. Each and every well have its own uniqueness and hence its own story.Wells are more of a decentralised mechanism of water source, harvesting and storage. They were resultant of individual need / will as well as community participation.
Most of the wells were built in a community where people from the village would come together , identified their need , looked for the appropriate place where they could find adequate water and then constructed to serve the village or the community. This whole process of building a well developed a sense of ownership and let to a healthy community living.
Wells are one of the most primary invention that was done in water sector to extract ground water for use of human livelihoods. I am inquisitive to know how indigenous knowledge of human race understood that there is water deep inside the earth and it is a source of clean sweet water. I am not even sure that whether these wells were designed in order to harvest rain water and store that in underground chambers , or it was designed only to extract water and later it was used for water storage.
Nevertheless, wells are a dying entity in our society, Community wells no longer exist in an urban fabric and bore-wells are being housed in every residential unit making it more as self-centered society. Measures adopted by government agencies to provide water through pipe have led to further degradation of the wells. Wells being a labour intensive source of water developed a sense of responsibility however in case of pipe water supply we are totally un aware of the source and also we don’t know the multiple efforts undertaken by the agencies to supply clean drinking water to the household. This ignorance about the reality has led to irresponsible use of water and has led to generation of humongous amount of waste water. Waste water is the primary source of contamination of potable water existing in the an urban fabric.
Wells / Ponds (229 words)
Stepwells are wells or ponds in which the water is reached by descending a set of steps to the water level. In my recent visit – Dhobi Talao area in Mumbai I found large number of small wells that were constructed during British time. Most of the wells were either constructed between two households. Mr Usman , who has been residing in the area since last 42 years ,tells that each and every house was having a small well , these were known as ‘ bavadi’ in local terminology. I managed to find few of them that were locked and still being used. However most of the Bavadi were closed majorly because of two reasons. Firstly, ground water has receded and hence no water in the well and secondly, most the well water is contaminated and is unfit for any usage. Interestingly, few of the wells where water is potable it is in surplus and it is being sold to other communities through water tankers at relatively higher price. The owners of these wells have pipe water supply to serve their basic needs, and they enjoy liberty of using well water as per their requirements. It helps them when there is not water supply from municipality as it generates revenue for them.Save Water Essays (154 Words)
