The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) – introduced in 2000 by OECD – is a worldwide study that tests the scholastic performance and learning levels of 15-year-olds in reading, mathematics, and science. The test is conducted every three years.
After its dismal performance in 2009, India stayed away from PISA. India was placed 72nd among the 74 participating countries (the government had then blamed “out of context” questions for the poor show in 2009).

However, experts in India recommended that India take part in these tests. “This will lead to an improvement in learning levels of children and enhance the quality of education in the country. The OECD has agreed to ask some questions based on Indian context. I am confident that our students will perform well,” HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar.
India will be participating in PISA from here on.

Here’s a video that explains what PISA is or does. This video also gives some pointers on why the OECD’s number-crunchers trigger such intense debate about the state of education around the world every time they release the results of the latest PISA survey.
