Australian Professors review IIT (JEE) question papers, say ‘its tough’ but bad education practice.
A video is currently going viral online wherein six Australian professors are asked to review JEE question papers, required for admission to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology colleges.
Here are their reactions.
“If it’s not at all intimidating to you, you are a pretty impressive student,” says Dr James Hutchison, flipping through the question paper right at the beginning of the video. “I’d probably, you know, leave the exam room crying if I was in year 12 and I had to do this. Yeah, good luck, good luck.”
“I had a look at a couple of the math section papers and I would say that I would be fairly challenged to get a decent result in an hour,” Professor Barry Hughes, a mathematician, adds.
These comments highlight how difficult the entrance exam is, even for professors who teach those subjects.
Other professors point out that the questions asked of high school students in India are taught at university level in Australia.
So is the JEE exam a good way of selecting potential engineering students? The professors are not sure.
“A lot of the questions are based on the principle of memorisation and recitation, which I think is an extraordinarily bad education tool,” says Dr Shane Huntington.
Mathematician Barry Hughes also points out the “ugly question” of unequal access to resources and coaching classes. “We all know that in any educational system if you go to a good school, well resourced, with the best teachers and so on like that, you expect a better outcome… But with these race-against-the-clock-style examinations, there’s a trade-off between the student’s ability in the subject, natural intelligence, and their having been trained to deal with examinations of this type,” he says.
So clearly, they are not very impressed with this kind of education.

Bihar’s Super 30: Keeping the IIT Dream Alive for the Underprivileged
Super 30 is an innovative school, run by Anand Kumar, founder-director of Super 30, who offers free coaching to poor students seeking admission to IITs.
It’s a highly ambitious and innovative educational program running under the banner of “Ramanujan School of Mathematics”. It’s been operational since 2002 and has been changing lives since then.
He selects 30 students from poor families and grooms them for the IIT. Students have to pass a competitive test to get into Super 30. Once they are admitted, they spend about 16 hours a day at their Study routine.
He provides them with free coaching, free boarding & lodging, free food, paying for everything from his own pocket.
A labourer, a landless farmer, a mechanic, a small shopkeeper and a driver are among the proud parents of children who cracked the highly-competitive IIT-JEE exam in the past, thanks to this free coaching centre for underprivileged students in Bihar.
Every year, majority of the 30 students from Bihar’s Super 30 free coaching centre crack the Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE).
Here are some real instances where students from poor families have made it to the IIT.
- A father-less student, whose jobless mother could not afford to educate him came to know of Super 30 and cleared its screening test, and later on made it to the IIT
- A daughter of magazine vendor in Deha, 50km from Kanpur, saw acute hardship from her childhood as her father struggled to make both ends meet. She was provided all the help and finally cracked her dream exam.
- Another student is son of a mechanic. The parents somehow scraped together money to pay his school fees and today they are proud that their son is all set to go to IIT.
These are just few of the instances, there are many more!
Super 30 has featured in the national and international news media. Japan’s famous actress Norika Fujiwara and its NHK channel have featured the initiative, as has French 24, Discovery Channel and CC TV from China.
Time magazine declared Super 30 the ‘best of Asia’, while Newsweek included it in the list of four most innovative schools of the world.
Mumbai’s IIT coaching classes now attract pan-India students
In less than a decade, the number of wannabe engineers picking Mumbai for their IIT-JEE prep has risen by 800% (shoots up from 2,000 to 15,000 in under 10 years).
Kota in Rajasthan is a popular destination as a coaching hub for the hyper-competitive engineering exams, but tales about punishing 18-hour study schedules and high burnout rates (60 teens have committed suicide in the past six years says this report) put off many students from going there.
Recently, Hyderabad surpassed Kota as the preparatory mecca for engineering students, and now Mumbai–although not in the same league–is seeing good spike in the number of outstation students coming here for IIT coaching.
Reasons why Mumbai is attracting students for IIT coaching:
- Quality coaching available in Mumbai
- Well connected to various parts of India (tempting for students from various parts of Maharashtra)
- Those with relatives in Mumbai save on accommodation costs.
Most coaching centres conduct an entrance test to select the students, students also get scholarships based on their results — free boarding, or waiver of fees.
