CAT is a pre-requisite for admission to various Post Graduate and Fellow Programmes of IIMs. CAT scores are allowed to be used by listed non-IIM member institutions. A list of such institutions is provided on CAT website. IIMs have no rol in the selection process of non-IIM institutions.
Tips to Crack CAT: Be Positive & Smart
- Give as many simulated tests as possible – but more importantly, analyse each one of them to identify your strengths and weaknesses.
- Split the number of hours between Verbal, Quant and DI-LR. Ideally you should spend around 4-6 hours each on Quant and Verbal and maybe 2-3 hours on DI (Data Interpretation) and LR (Logical Reasoning) every week.
- Learn how to use options while solving questions. Learn more efficient ways of solving the same question.
- Intelligent guessing can also be used as a score improvement strategy. If one has been able to eliminate two choices, then one can choose between the other two choices and mark the answer. In this case, there is a 50% probability of success.
- Alongside your CAT preparation, try and add value to your profile. If you are working, do well at your work-place: If you are studying, ensure you get good grades: also try and do projects and internships that add value to your CV. Participation in extracurricular and social projects are other ways of enhancing your profile.
- At the final stage the objective should be to maximise your attempts and accuracy in a test.
- Practice the art of choosing the right questions to solve. Keeping an eye on options, don’t get stuck in particular questions and efficiently manage your time.
- Sectional time limit is a boon for students who aren’t good at time management and who end up spending more time in one section at the cost of other. As the IIMs require you to show equal competency in each of the sections, you will have to display equal competency in all the three sections.
- Allocating time between the sections is of paramount importance. Suppose one completes a section very fast, the accuracy level goes down and in addition, if one saves time and tries to come back to this section and complete it, one would not be able to concentrate to a degree possible in the first attempt.
- Most of the aspirants would have a feeling of ‘butterflies in the stomach’ on the day of the exam but this is what everyone feels as the pressure of scoring good marks is always there. It is normal to have such a feeling. To relax, make yourself a part of the environment at the test centre. If you reach early and reach your seat before time, do a bit of talking with with your neighbour. Breathe in and breathe out deeply to relax.
