Were you laid off and are looking for another job?
Are you a mom who had taken a break from work to spend time with family and intend to start working again?
I can be really frustrating if you have been searching for a job, especially after being unemployed for a long period of time.
Having personally experienced that, and through my own experiences of finding a job, I have listed some job hunting tips that can help you in your search.
Job Search Tips
Some of them may be obvious but it may not occur to you when things are not looking good.
Actively Spend Time Searching for a Job
Before I go through the steps, what you should realize that in order to get a job, or at least get a call for interview, you should reach out to as many sources as possible.
It means:
- You should post on the top job sites
- You should reach out to your network. Just check the number of Whatsapp group you have on phone, let them know you are looking for a job.
- Reach out to your relatives, uncles, aunts, let them know if there’s someone who’s looking for a skill-set as yours
- If your friends or relatives ask you to go and meet somebody, please go and show them your face. Rehearse what you’re going to say if you’re asked to describe about yourself, your skill set, what have you worked on in the past, and what you’re looking for. The confidence shown by you may prompt them to refer you to some other person, or they themselves may ask you if you’re ready to work on some freelancing opportunities.
- finally, prepare thoroughly for job interviews, in case you get a call. anticipate questions, learn how to answer strengths/weaknesses type questions, practical challenges faced on job and how you handled them, trends in your industry and so on
The point is to reach out to as many avenues as possible that could help you get a job or freelancing opportunity.
Research
Its important to learn important facts about the company beforehand.
The internet is one of the best ways to search for information, and most companies provide their own websites. Study the content of the company’s website; know their background, goals, strengths and weaknesses, past projects, and other important information.
Learn as much as possible about its competitors, and find out who leads the market space. Having this knowledge will help you during the interview, since you’ll be able to justify how the company is better than its competitors.
Right Attitude
Having the right attitude towards the interview and the job itself would ensure the position is yours. So be energetic about the job and interview.

Since you have done your research about the company and its competitors, the interviewers will appreciate your enthusiasm and interest about the position.
Preparation
The position you desire could be yours as long as you show up prepared.
Create a presentation by researching the products and services of the company. Be prepared to speak directly and intelligently about the company’s market space.
Provide statistics and industry related facts in your presentation. This goes to show that not only are you enthusiastic about the job, you are also aware of the condition of the industry.
If you are eyeing a sales job, you need to be good with numbers. If you are asked about your numbers, simply provide them with production reports, past employment lists, etc.
Build a Professional Looking Resume
This might seem to be an obvious one but it is important that your resume looks professional, is eye catching and highlights your key experiences at a glance. Hire professional services if required.

Reach out to Companies
Don’t just post on job search sites. Reach out to the companies that you want to work for. All companies have their own website so post your resume on their website.
Update Your Online Profile
It is easy to find about people on the internet. So go and update your online profile, be it on Linked-in, Facebook, or any other site. If you have your own blog, go and update it and show-off your expertise.
Headhunters / Job Sites
Don’t just stick to the big ones like monster; post your resume at other lesser known sites and you’ll be surprised with the results.
Be Persistent
This is where you keep on trying till you find that job. It is also important that you stay focused and organized so that you only take up quality stuff (depending on how desperately you need that job)
Use your network where you can. Companies are more likely to hire you if they hear about you from a mutual source.
Protect Your Privacy When Applying for Jobs Online
When you apply for a job, your resume should basically give an idea about your capabilities & your experiences so far. Its more about what you can do, more than where you live or what your phone number is.
To protect your privacy, make sure your resume shares your qualifications & experiences, without exposing too much personal information. It’s more important to provide information that gives them an idea as to what you can provide them as an employee.
New College Graduates Find it Tough to Get a Job
Even though the unemployment rate may have improved a bit, finding jobs, especially for new college graduates could be tough. Besides, it also depends on the students’ major.
Years of formal education have come to an end, and its time to start on a career. It all begins with finding a job first.
Many would have also be keen to get rid of that student loan at the earliest.
But is it easy to get a job for a new college graduate?
Most students who started (college) four years ago had already heard from older students how tough it was to look for jobs, and they came into college with that mindset.
Internships and experience is getting more important than ever before.
Many are also open to experiment with a variety of fields.
Which Sectors are Hiring?
Job availability also depends on what you have graduated in. So, students with a certain major have a greater chance of finding jobs quickly, because of the skills they now have.
For instance, if you have a degree in health care, engineering, or accountancy, you’ll likely have an easier time finding a job, as these are much-sought-after skills.
On the other hand, the demand for graduates in mass communications is lower, so they may have to look for a job outside of the area they were directly trained for.
Where are the Jobs?
Businesses are looking for college graduates who can work in fields such as accounting, insurance, finance, real estate, transportation, retail and corporate management.
The job market has been especially difficult for:
- Those in the so-called “millennial” generation
- Those in their 20s and often just out of college, or graduate school.
Plan of Action
From what most job surveys indicate, if you are a student, it might make sense to do some research to find out the demand for the occupation that you want to go into.
You don’t want to spend so much money in college fees and then find out in your senior years that there’s not much demand for your chosen occupation. If that happens, unless you have a clear idea of what you want to do with your life, you’ll struggle to get a job.
Make Your CV Stand Out
The CV (Curriculum Vitae) is the first, and at most times the most important part of applying for a job.
Since potential employers have to whittle down practically hundreds of applications to a few valid ones (depends on the position), they will have to base their narrowing down efforts using the CVs they have collected.
About half of the employers decide to accept or reject job applications based on the related work experience listed in the CV. A third of the employers decide to reject or accept these job applications based on the layout design of these applications.
When preparing your CV, make sure your CV stands out among the rest. It should be the type that is appealing to the eyes, making the evaluating personnel want to read the CV.
Step two is for you to make sure your CV lists the related work experience you have had, in relation to the position you are applying for.
Concise, Relevant & Tailored to the Job:
Avoid making your CVs too long; show the most relevant information in the least amount of time.
Make sure your CV is appropriate for the job. A one-size-fits-all CV may not be the best way to go since the employer will have the impression that your previous efforts have not been focused enough to produce any specialization on your part.
Make sure to spend time polishing your CV.
You may also add your achievements, but make your statements factual and relevant. It doesn’t harm to advertise yourself, but make your advertisement matter-of-fact and not just hot air.
You may also want to skip on listing your weak points as the CV is not the avenue for such discussions.
Should You Quit Your Job?
Of course, the decision to quit your job, as well as when and how you do so, is your decision to make. However, its important to at least have a plan of action in place, so that you don’t put yourself and your family in any sort of financial trouble.
For many individuals, that plan of action could be a new job already lined up. But why is it so important to first have a new job lined up?
Because, there are many who live from paycheck to paycheck, and most companies prefer hiring those who already have a job.
If you are financial stable enough to quit your job before you have a new one lined up, you may still want to proceed with caution. It is advised that you try and give your employer at least two weeks notice. If you are unable to do so, you may risk losing your current employer as a job reference. If you have worked at your current job for some time now, you may want to keep this important point in mind.
Contract and Temporary Jobs to increase in future
Economies around the world are witnessing the growth of part-time and “contract” jobs, filling many of the new jobs that are created. Economists predict contract workers will play a larger role in the years ahead.
Those working on contracts/part-time include a diverse army of laborers, ranging from janitors, security officers, home-care and food service-workers to computer programmers, freelance photographers and illustrators. Many are involved in manufacturing. Many others are self-employed, working under contracts that lay out specific responsibilities and deadlines.
So is this a good sign? Labor leaders and many economists don’t think so and are a worried lot. Contract workers have less job security and don’t contribute to the economy through spending as much as permanent, full-time workers. Nor do they have the same job protections.
Part-time and contract jobs in the past tended to rise during recessions and recede during recoveries. But it doesn’t seem to be the case any longer. Businesses often hire contract workers or freelancers because it is less expensive than hiring full-time workers.
“Workers increasingly serve businesses that do not officially ’employ’ the worker — a distinction that hampers organizing, erodes labor standards and dilutes accountability,” said one economist.
However, there are several business leaders who think otherwise.
Some people don’t want to be a full-time employee by choice; they want contract work, and so they work happily at work. The contract period also provides both parties to understand if they’re happy working together.
Many feel the current situation is not bad as it offers more flexibility. Some people may not like it but that’s where everybody seems to be moving.
There’s another reason why some companies see it as a positive development. Pressure from a company’s shareholders — often focused on short-term returns — can also lead businesses to lower labor costs by reclassifying a portion of their payroll as part-timers or spinning them off to a contracting agency.
Analysts feel that contract and “temp” jobs will only increase in the future as more people retire from their full-time jobs.
Apply for Temporary Positions?
While everyone has their own variation of a dream job, there are many who prefer flexible working hours, steady work, and high pay.
Unfortunately, there is no such job. Besides, if you are having difficultly finding a permanent position, you may want to explore temporary jobs; but are they right for you?
Here are a few factors that’ll help you decide:
- If you are currently employed and seeking a change in career, a temporary position could provide you with valuable relevant experience, on which you can build further.
- If you are currently unemployed and in need of money, temporary jobs can help you. Besides, most employers understand that their temporary employees are searching for more permanent jobs. This makes it easier for you to cease your working relationship with a temporary employer, should you get another job.
- Another thing to factor in is health insurance, as most temporary employers do not offer health insurance to their temporary employees. So you need to plan for that! Besides, you may also not be entitled to other job benefits such as sick pay, vacation time, etc.
