What is IMO?
The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition, held annually, for High School students. The IMO Foundation is a charity which supports the IMO.
The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with seven countries participating. It has gradually expanded to more than 100 countries from five continents.
Why IMO is so popular?
The IMO mathematics competition for high school students is the most prestigious and the most difficult high school mathematics competition in the world.
Its the competition where brainy students show their genius for problem solving.
How many students can participate?
Every country can send at the most only 6 contestants, accompanied by a Team Leader and a Deputy Team leader. The contestants compete individually over period of two days.
IMO Scores Calculation
IMO scores are based on the number of points scored by individual team members on six problems. On each day of the two-day competition, the teams have 4.5 hours to work on three problems.
As one commentator put it: “Some of the boys who are really good are well-grounded, normal human beings with normal interests and friendships. But it’s true that some of the boys taking part are socially withdrawn and a small number are on the autistic spectrum. In order to do maths, it’s unnecessary to have any emotional maturity. You just need to be able to reason.”
Sample/Example Questions at the Math Olympiad
Often you can solve a problem without using particularly advanced techniques, but you have to be creative about the way you use them.
Problem 2. Let R be the set of real numbers. Determine all functions f : R ? R such that, for all real numbers x and y, f (f(x)f(y)) + f(x + y) = f(xy).
Problem 3. A hunter and an invisible rabbit play a game in the Euclidean plane. The rabbit’s starting point, A0, and the hunter’s starting point, B0, are the same. After n?1 rounds of the game, the rabbit is at point An?1 and the hunter is at point Bn?1. In the n th round of the game, three things occur in order.
(i) The rabbit moves invisibly to a point An such that the distance between An?1 and An is exactly 1.
(ii) A tracking device reports a point Pn to the hunter. The only guarantee provided by the tracking device to the hunter is that the distance between Pn and An is at most 1.
(iii) The hunter moves visibly to a point Bn such that the distance between Bn?1 and Bn is exactly 1.
Is it always possible, no matter how the rabbit moves, and no matter what points are reported by the tracking device, for the hunter to choose her moves so that after 109 rounds she can ensure that the distance between her and the rabbit is at most 100?
Medals for the participants
Almost half of the contestants end up getting medals – Gold, silver, and bronze medals. Non-medalist participants (who completely solves at least one problem) is given an Honorable Mention award.
How does the Medal Help?
A gold medal at the IMO opens up several opportunities, including a university education. Some gold-medalists, despite not yet finishing school, get awarded scholarships from reputed universities.
