School, college students to get a lesson on fire safety

Following the Kamala Mills fire incident that took place towards the end of December 2017, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has chalked out plans to hold fire mock drills at various schools, colleges, malls, shopping centres, crowded places and housing societies to train people with fire fighting skills and measures to deal with emergency situations. The NMMC fire department has kicked off the drive from a Sanpada school and will cover other institutions as well.

Many years ago, there was a big fire at a five-star hotel (J. P. Hotel) in upscale Vasant Vihar. So many people died. But the Japanese and Americans guests at the hotel survived. Why? Because they put wet towels under the doors so that no smoke enters their rooms. They put wet handkerchiefs on their faces and lay on the floor, as the smoke moved up. Most deaths are caused because of smoke inhalation, not fire. Most Indians in the building jumped out of their windows and many died. The critical difference has to do with training. General public should be made aware of what to do and how to behave in case of fire.

NMMC was quick to come out with an appropriate and consolidated plan and strategies to overcome such contingency situations in Navi Mumbai. The civic body has tightened the noose on hoteliers and commercial establishments and have asked them to take immediate measures to revive the fire safety NOC. The civic body’s fire department has started creating awareness among people on how to tackle the situation before the firemen reach the accident spot.

Students will be the target audience for NMMC’s drive who, in turn, can educate people in their neighbourhood. The drive kicked off from Ryan International School in Sanpada.
