Board Exam Papers: Are You Sure Experts Are At Work?

Are you sure competent people are checking your kid’s board exam papers? Do you think their hard-work is going pay off?

Here’s an instance were Gujarati medium teacher have checked the papers of English medium students.

And why’s that so?

English Medium Teachers Unavailable for Assessment

Its because about 50% of the English medium teachers skipped paper checking that began last week! And that is where the Gujarati medium teachers were called in to fill-in the gap.

This happened with the recently held exams of the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB).

At an assessment centre in Kankaria where chemistry papers of English medium HSC (science) students are being checked, only 19 of the 41 teachers who were given orders, turned up. In the Ghodasar centre, only 14 of the 38 teachers turned up to check the physics paper.

In Naranpura, where maths papers are being assessed, only 23 teachers reported for duty with 30 remaining absent.

Teachers Not Turning Up: Lack of Proper Arrangements

Not many English medium teachers reporting for assessment has been a serious concern for several years. And that is one of the reasons that the Gujarat Education Board chairman R R Varsani personally called up the English medium teachers, asking them to assess answer sheets of SSC and HSC board exams.

He has also asked the district education officers (DEOs) to ensure that English medium teachers report for paper checking.

Over one lakh English medium students have appeared for the board exams this year. An estimated 1,000 teachers from English medium schools were ordered to assess answer sheets but about 500 turned up. In sharp contrast, over 75 per cent Gujarati medium teachers reported for assessment work.

But why are those teachers not turning up for assessment?

The reason cited is the unavailability of infrastructure, and that proper arrangements are missing.

Students & Parents Are Unhappy

And for obvious reasons, parents and students are not happy. Students feel it’s a grave injustice that a Gujarati medium teacher ends up checking their papers.

In fact, they feel a much better options would be to call in private tuition teachers, if there’s a shortage of teachers to assess answer sheets of SSC and HSC board exams.
